The Pit Report - San Jose State Event Center 4/14/02

Ah, I was all ready to go. I found free parking right by the arena, had my bottle of water with a sport cap, my ticket in hand, and of course, Spinny Chuck in my purse. I ventured through the door, where they took my WATER away from me! I asked if I could at least bring the empty bottle to fill at a drinking fountain instead of braving the germs on those things, but they said no and admitted it was because the venue wants you to pay a ridiculous amount for THEIR water. Bastards. So I chugged as much as my tummy would hold and headed for the floor. There were already hundreds of people sitting out there, so I worked my way toward the front until I found a space just big enough to plunk down my not-so-small booty. Shortly after, the color of the lights on the Hoobastank banner changed, and everyone stood up and rushed to the front. No, the show was not starting. It was just idiotic sheep mentality.

Finally at 7:30 as scheduled, Hoobastank took to the stage and played a 30 minute set. I'd never heard these guys before, but I must say I totally dug their music. Things in the pit were still fairly calm. After they were done, and after about a half hour of waiting around and being pressed against people from all angles, Incubus appeared. The crowd went INSANE. I was so crushed that I could not take a full breath of air and I was in imminent danger of losing my footing and falling down as the crowd surged in every direction. Ah, it was perfect. After a couple songs, things calmed down a bit, well at least I could breathe anyway, and a nice pit opened up just to my right. I love Incubus pits. Yeah, we're all running into each other and going crazy, but there's still some degree of courtesy in there. Spinny Chuck was up in full effect, and helped me locate my friends from enjoychuck.com, Gerlando and Andrea pretty quickly. Eventually I ended up about 20 people from the front and on the edge of the pit where I could finally admire the stage set-up. (Read Gerlando's review at enjoychuck.com for description) And of course, Incubus sounded amazing. The only downside I experienced was the intense heat down in the front, and twice I had to make my way out of there to get some air. I swear I could feel a 10 degree temperature change just when I got to the side of the pit. (and if only stupid security didn't take my water away, I wouldn't have had to get out of there at all.)

As far as the odd events that occured that evening, I did not see the moment where something hit Dirk's instument (I think I was outside buying a t-shirt), nor did I see the crowd surfer hit the ground (I say good - that's what they get!) but I did see a couple of interesting things out there. First of all, during "Echo" there was a girl on someone's shoulders near me who was singing along, reaching out to Brandon, and CRYING. Yes, crying. Like the women you see footage of weeping at a Beatles concert back in the 60's. Can you say FUCKING DOUCHEBAG? Never the less, I got a pretty good laugh out of it. But the next thing really takes the cake: In the middle of the mosh pit, an Asian guy with spikey hair ran out into the middle of the craziness and started BREAKDANCING. Breakdancing like nobody's business in the middle of the chaotic pit! That guy gets the Evil Carrot Madd Props Award for that one!!! Definitely an awesome thing to have witnessed. All in all, it was an amazing show, a good crowd, lots of energy, and tons of fun! (Even if I am a little sore today!) See you tomorrow in SF!

The Pit Report - SF Bill Graham Civic Auditorium 4/16/02

They all thought I was crazy. But there I was, standing in the pouring rain with a bottle of mudslide in one hand and my camera in the other, patiently waiting by the band's bus for over 2 hours. But I briefly saw Dirk's face through the window and I watched Jose hop on the bus, so if they (and any other members on the bus) wanted to get from the bus to the venue, they were going to have to get through me! Eventually Jose and Dirk appeared and came to meet the 9 poor souls out there braving the storm to meet them, and they were super nice. (pictures will be up in the gallery as soon as I develop them)

Now it was time to hit the pit.

We arrived on the floor just a few minutes before Hoobastank started playing, and I think I may very well have been the first unfortunate person to fall down. Well, me and about 3 other people. This big sweaty fat guy with bitch-tits in front of me came stampeding backward and a few of us went down (imagine the domino effect). No one was hurt, but people thought I was because I didn't get up right away... My shoe had come off! I had one leg out behind me holding onto my precious shoe with just a single toe, determined not to spend the evening barefoot and my shoe being thrown at the band. So while my friend was trying to pull me up and some girl was screaming to get up, and everyone clearing away from me thinking I was injured, I finally managed to grab my shoe and secure my foot back inside it. Whew! That was our cue to go smoke a bowl.

So during intermission, we farted around for a while and found some FREE earplugs at the first aid station. The t-shirt people were trying to charge $2 per pair! I knew better, so I went and got some free ones and made sure to wave them in the face of the little ogre who tried to convince me that earplugs were never free. We headed toward the back of the floor when Incubus came out, and my friend wanted to spend the evening there as he was too drunk and high to deal with the insanity and chaos of the front. But I couldn't do it... so we went our separate ways and I claimed a few inches of territory right in front of Mike. I had a blast! There were some injuries nearby though.... 2 women right next to me got in a fist fight and I was unfortunate enough to have caught a stray punch in the face. Luckily, this chick was weak and it didn't hurt... otherwise I'd have joined in that fight and beat some ass! But these two were so riled up that it took 5 big guys on each of the women to tear them apart. Then, only moments later, I watched a girl get kicked above the eye by a crowd surfer... she looked pretty hurt, but toughed it out. Then some guy passed me, half limping and half being carried by a friend, and soon after, 3 people dragged an unconsious woman past me! Craziness! (I even saw some guy leaving the show on crutches... that's gotta suck)

But I managed to survive the show unscathed and one more Incubus memory richer. They played INCREDIBLE last night. The sound was mixed much better than the SJ show and no band members or instruments were injured. I got right up in front and took a roll of photos, but have no idea how they will come out... I'll see them at 5 this afternoon though! The setlist was basically the same as the previous shows on this tour, but I did have to laugh hysterically when they did a full rendition of Madonna's 'Like A Virgin'. (In SJ they started to do it and then were like "just kidding" and stopped) It was indeed a strange spectacle to see the thousands of fans out there at an INCUBUS concert singing along to old-school Madonna. Very weird indeed. But the band appeared to be having a good time, as they always seem to in San Francisco. (let's hear it for SF! The coolest people in the country!) And the energy of the whole place collectively was amazing, definite positive vibes all around! *sigh* I'm sad to see that the Northern California leg of the tour is over, but who knows, they may just go right back on tour when they're finished with this one! (that's what they did after the release of Make Yourself - toured for about 2 years straight before heading back into the studio!) So who knows.....

See you on the next tour...

Met 'em again

So I mosied on down to the Warfield last night but this time got there early and hung around the bus from 5pm to 8pm. I was talking to a security guard who was hitting on me, so I played it off like I was flirting back so that he wouldn't shoo me away if any of the band members came out... And sure enough they did!!!
Brandon was the first to wander out, and he was a total sweetie. We talked for a minute, took a picture, he signed some stuff, and he had to hop on the bus to do an interview.
A little while later Mike came out... He wasn't so friendly, which suprised me since I hear he's usually the friendliest of the bunch, but I think he was in a hurry or something.
After a bit, Kilmore showed up... HE WAS AWESOME! That is the most nice, down to earth guy ever! I was racking my brain to try to remember even ONE of the questions people on here wanted answers to, but I was so stunned that I just drew a blank. I did however manage to ask Chris if they EVER planned on telling anyone who Chuck is, but Kilmore just laughed and said "No way! Never!" Kilmore fuckin rocks. Awesome guy all the way!
Then after quite some time, they all came off the bus, and I finally managed to catch Jose for a quick photo, but they were running late to get into the building and start the show, so I didn't really get to talk to him. It was so much better last night though, without a million little girls crowding around... there was only like 5 people out there at any given time. I definitely recommend trying to meet them BEFORE a show rather than after (got this tip from a security guard the night before).
Oh, and the sweetest thing ever... Brandon had my pen (and actually remembered) and came up behind me, put his arm around me for a second, and said "Here's your pen lovely." and scooted off. Aw, he called me "lovely"
Okay, so I sound like a fuckin groupie or something, but I'm not ashamed to admit that it made me feel all warm and gooey inside to hear him say that.
Unfortunately, Dirk(Alex) never showed up. I was pretty bummed about that... But wow, what an amazing evening!!! Oh, and I bumped into someone that knew me from the bbs (wazzup girl!), actually, it seems a lot of people remember me for having that CHUCK light-up-thingy..... Heh, I love toys.

Ahhhh... I can die happy now....

The Pit Report - SF Warfield 11/19/01

So I was down on the floor, moshing around and being drunk and feeling orgasmically happy just to be there in the crowd once again (it'd been a whole year since I last saw them!) But I was also feeling a bit sad that security made me check my camera since I got such a great spot. The setlist was AWESOME 'cause they included lots of stuff off science, and I also got noticed by the Incuboys because I had this toy where there are flashing red lights on the end of a plastic thing, and you spin it around and it spells a message... I programmed it to say "CHUCK" and after one song, Brandon saw it and started laughing and goes, "Yeah, Chuck! Alright!" and continued to rock the house. When it had appeared that they had finished after playing WYWH, my friend and I bolted out of the crowd, he went down to the coat check and got my camera, I got a Chuck doing karate t-shirt, and once I got my camera, disappeared back into the crowd just in time for the encore. I had my sweet little zoom lens and I don't know how the hell I did it, but I managed to get right back in front and shot an entire roll of photos in only two songs. They will be on my website by Monday, PROMISE!

The moment they were finished, we jammed out the door, got our posters (incredible artwork on these! I'll post a scan of one as well) and headed for the back door. After about an hour of bullshitting with security and almost kicking some glitter-bitch's ass for crowding into me, I saw an afro approaching the bus. (the amount of teenies outside was seriously pissing me off... I met the BIGGEST groupie ever out there) As soon as I saw Mike and Brandon (Jose, Dirk and Chris just hopped straight on the bus... suckas) I started spinning my "Chuck" thing and they immediately remembered me. They signed my poster, my science cd, and my enjoy cd, and were very very nice. I told Brandon thanks for such a great performance and that they did a great job, and he gave me a big smile and said thank you and shook my hand... It took me a moment to bring myself to let go. I asked Brandon if I could get a quick photo with him, and he said okay, but then one of his body guards literally grabbed him around his waist and dragged him to the bus... damn! But it was kinda funny to see him carted off like a little kid by his bodyguard.

Needless to say, I had one of the most wonderful nights ever. I just wish I could go to tonight's show! Oh, and you know that beanie that Brandon ALWAYS wears? Well it now belongs to some lucky bastard in San Francisco... yup, he chucked it into the crowd. Hope he has another one like it! Oh, and to top off my wonderful evening, I dreamed I was back at their show and chilled with the band for hours afterward, so in a way, I got to enjoy incubus twice! Woot! And hey, there were these two baby yorkies on the bus... anyone know who they belong to? They were so cute!

Record companies suck goat schlong!

I hate Incubus now. I waited in line for FIVE AND A HALF HOURS, not to mention the 2 hour drive to get there, and they shut the door right when I was NEXT. Live 105 lied their asses off saying that if you buy the CD that you get a wristband GUARANTEEING you'll meet them.. sure you got a wristband. But what Live105 didn't tell people is that you had to buy the album on Oct. 23rd, and if you bought it on the 24th you get a wristband for the "secondary" line. The line they MIGHT get to. And out of thousands of people, they left when there was only a couple hundred left. And they left EARLY. They were supposed to be there until 10 but they left at 9. Fuckin bastards. Even Fred Durst isn't THAT much of a jerk. Pricks...

Yay!

Today's the day... I get to meet Incubus today! Omigod I'm totally excited! I have a rediculous amount of shit for them to sign, hope they don't mind! Ugh, I'm not looking forward to the line though! I hear that the line for the signing in New York was 3 city blocks long, and one guy got there at 3 and didn't meet them until 8. Wowsers... Good thing I'm leaving work early today! I can't wait I can't wait I can't wait!

Incubus is coming to town!

Can you say "FUCKIN' STOKED"??? So not only do I get to see Incubus on November 19th, but this Thursday they've decided to bless us with their presence at Tower Records in Concord for an evening to sign their new album "Morning View" (which I highly recommend picking up, it's great). My boss found it in his heart to let me leave early that day so I can insure my spot in line. Hope the guys don't mind if I bring more than just my copy of Morning View! (I have all their other cd's and a couple promo photos I'd like to get signed too) I am just so psyched to finally get to meet one of the greatest bands I've ever heard. Unfortunately, I will have to carefully step over all the 12 year old girls that are just there because "Brandon's hot." Which, don't get me wrong, he IS hot... majorly! But it just disgusts me to see little girls gushing over him, and I even heard he has made an appearance in BOP magazine. Gag me with a smurf! Oh well, as long as they keep making awesome music and remember that just because they are famous they are still just like you and me (a.k.a. not god) then it's all good... I'll put up with the teenies. But they better not get in my way at the concert... I might have step on some teenie-bopper toes. I'll try my best to talk the Incuboys into a quick photo on Thursday, which if successful, will immediately be up on my site. Anyway in other news, I'm moving this Saturday and I'm so excited! I ordered my couches yesterday and am buying my bed this weekend. Unfortunately, my couches will take 2 to 4 weeks to arrive so I'll be sitting on this cheesy inflatable loveseat that's been in my trunk for a year and a half until they get here. But it's no biggie... I'm not planning on hooking up my cable right away, so I guess I don't really need a place to lounge around and watch TV just yet. Heh, me without cable... we'll see how long that actually lasts! Good thing I have a ton of books! Yup yup.
